Why I Started A List Of NJ Farmers Markets And Public Transportation

How It Got Its Start

I used to drive to on-site farm markets and a nearby downtown farmers market. After I became carless, I thought the only option was the nearby farmers market. It was walkable, and happened to be located at a train station. 

Hmmm. That got me thinking. Are there any other farmers markets located at a train station? And are any on a bus route?

The Answer Is. . .

YES! Happily, I have found out that many farmers markets are very close to public transportation.

Now I realize just how many farmers markets are located at train stations. Many others are a short walk from a station or bus stop.

Supporting Them Remains Important

Even without a car, I am thrilled and grateful that I can still attend these markets — getting good produce and products, and supporting their businesses.

It’s actually because of not having a car that my awareness has grown. I‘ve been able to support so many more farms and local businesses. 

You can certainly frequent the same market, or a limited number, and give a more targeted, concentrated flow of support. That’s good too.

The first selections are locations that I can get to easily and affordably. No more than one transfer (for me) to get there. So, for practical reasons, the list has started off heavy in northeast NJ markets. The region has a fairly vast network of buses and trains. 

There are many markets all over NJ with hardworking farmers and makers that we can support.

I plan to add to this list in the future, if the Lord allows. I hope it’s helpful for you. And, I hope it encourages you to think about how you can support area farmers and local businesses.
